Defending the title!

Few teams have been good enough to win a World Championship title once and even fewer have been able to defend it.

  • The first to do it was the legendary Ernie Richardson's team from Canada that did it twice. All in all they won four Scotch Cup titles, 1959, 1960, 1962 and finally in 1963.
  • Ron Northcott and his Canadian rink took three titles during the sixties. They won in 1966, again in 1968 and then defended the title in 1969.
  • Don Duguid of Canada followed and won two straight titles, being undefeated both times, in 1970 and 1971.
  • The first Women's team to do it was Norway's Dordi Nordby that won back to back titles in 1990 and 1991.
  • The nineties was dominated by two teams on the Women's side. The Canadian team skipped by Sandra Schmirles that won back to back in 1993 and 1994. Later they added another title in 1997 and won the Olympic Gold in 1998.
  • The other great team of the nineties was Sweden's Elisabet Gustafson and her team that won four World titles. Their first win came in 1992, then the second in 1995 and finally back to back titles in 1998 and 1999.
  • It took another 32 years on the Men's side until it happened again. The Randy Ferbey team won three titles in four years in 2002, 2003 and again in 2005. Randy himself had another title he won, playing for Pat Ryan in 1989.
  • The most successful women's team of the first decade of this century was another Swedish rink skipped by Anette Norberg. The team won back to back titles in 2005 and 2006 and added two Olympic Golds in 2006 and 2010.
  • Switzerland's Silvana Tirinzoni and her team is arguably the best women's team ever winning four straight titles in 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023. They are one of only two teams in Curling history to win four titles in a row.
  • Niklas Edin and his team of Sweden is nothing but a dynasty on the men&339;s side. The team won five titles in six years between 2018 and 2024 only losing out to Scotland in 2023. Four championships in a row for the team, add an Olympic Gold and furthermore, Niklas has two additional titles for a total of seven, most of any player. Oskar Eriksson has an additional title for a total of six.
